Greens Unveil Higgins Transport Plan
Greens candidate for Higgins, Sam Hibbins, has unveiled a new transport plan aimed at getting cars and trucks off the road by expanding public transport, improving cycling paths and upgrading rail freight infrastructure.
Yesterday, Hibbins and Greens transport spokesperson in State Parliament Greg Barber ‘walked the distance’ between the end of the Number 3 Waverly Rd tram line and East Malvern Station, to highlight the missing links within the local public transport network.
“The Greens Higgins Transport Plan would extend the Number 3 tram all the way to East Malvern Station, filling in a missing link in our public transport system,” said Mr Hibbins.
Mr Barber added that, "It’s probably an historical accident that this tram stops 400 meters short of East Malvern station, but what it shows us is that no one’s doing the thinking and planning we need for an integrated network. For this city to work we need network connections and this is probably the cheapest, easiest and most obvious one in the whole of Melbourne".
The Greens Higgins Transport Plan will address missing links, make services cheaper, safer and more convenient, and improve cycling infrastructure in the area.
“Lets shift federal funding away from clogged noisy freeways and toward sustainable transport right here in Higgins,” said Mr Hibbins.
“Improving transport in Higgins will require cooperation from local, state & federal governments.
“If elected as the federal member for Higgins, I’ll provide the leadership to make this happen”
“Overall our plan will cut congestion, make us healthier, save us money, and will keep our air clean.”
