Greens Senate candidate Lee Rhiannon has launched The Australian Greens Indigenous policy in NSW.

“The Greens support an amendment of the Australian constitution to formally recognise Indigenous Australians. We have moved for this in Parliament in the past and we will do so again until Indigenous Australians are recognised in the supreme legal document of Australia as the first owners of this nation.

"The Greens stand alone in calling for the abolition of the Northern Territory intervention.

"We recognise the compelling evidence that welfare quarantining in the Northern Territory as part of the NT intervention has had a negative effect on Indigenous Australians. I do not want to see this damaging, punitive and costly policy extended to Indigenous Australians in NSW.

"The Greens have been working with Indigenous Australians in the community and in Parliament to ensure that Indigenous Australians are supporting to take the lead in directing policies that impact onIndigenous Australians.

"The Greens recognise that Indigenous Australians must be partners with the government and community in the development and implementation of public policies to advance Indigenous Australians rights and aspirations.

"During my time in State Parliament I enjoyed working with Indigenous Australians to protect significant Indigenous sites that are threatened by the ongoing logging of the forests of South Eastern NSW.

"The Greens have a proud tradition of tradition of working with Indigenous Australians to improve their quality of life. I hope to be able to continue this work in the Senate representing Indigenous Australians from NSW," said Greens Senate candidate Lee Rhiannon.

The Greens commit to:

  • Amending the Constitution to formally recognise Indigenous Australians
  • Ending the Northern Territory intervention and put in place measures that genuinely help people to overcome disadvantage
  • Ensuring that Indigenous Australians are partners in the development and implementation of public policies to advance their rights and aspirations.
