Kerry Nettle cut her teeth in politics during the Jabiluka uranium mine blockades and direct actions against freeway expansion in Sydney. In 2000 Kerry took time off from her job as a youth worker to assist the East Timorese following independence.
Kerry was elected to the Senate in 2001 as voters backed The Greens appalled by Labor and the government’s stance on refugees.
Kerry soon became a champion for refugees campaigning against the mandatory detention policies of the government and Labor.
She came to national prominence during the visit of George Bush. Government MPs, including John Howard, physically obstructed Kerry from meeting the President and handing him a letter about Guantanamo Bay.
Kerry’s strong support for women’s reproductive rights, opposition to the Iraq war and defence of public education and multiculturalism have all earned her respect.
