Greens candidate for the Mayo by-election, Lynton Vonow has called for public transport and urgent improvements to road and rail to be made to help Kangaroo Island residents and tourism.
“The island has special needs when it comes to roads and public transport,” said Lynton.
“These two issues are often top of the list when I hear from local island residents.”
“Public transport is the key – but even more so now it is critical for the island with the ever-rising costs of fuel.
“Public transport is badly needed and bus services would help residents join the shift away from the motor cars.
“Small community buses, similar to that already running in Adelaide, would be a simple, cost effective and very welcome solution.
“The island relies on its fragile and special environment to attract visitors who are critical to the island’s economy; however the cost to the council of maintaining the highways is very high.
“Over 150,000 visitors take tours around the island every year but currently there is little Federal funding for the road network. Excessive wear and tear is also caused by the many thousands of visitors using cars and coaches every year.
“The Federal Government should recognize this island as having special needs when it comes to providing support for its tourist economy and help relieve the burden on the council.
“Eco-tourism is a vital industry, not only for Kangaroo Island, but the whole State of South Australia and the value of KI must not be overlooked when it comes to vital financial support,” he concluded.
