“I would like to wholeheartedly congratulate Independent Rob Oakeshott on his stunning result in the Lyne by-election”, said Greens candidate Susie Russell.
“Mr Oakeshott ran a very professional campaign and concentrated on the positive messages. It is not surprising that voters preferred his message to that run by the Nationals which was almost wholly negative.
“The vote for Mr Oakeshott is a clear indication that the community does not buy the argument that representation by the major parties is the best option. A similar message was sent in the South Australian by-election where the Greens nearly won the seat from the Liberals.
“I was very heartened at the positive response the Greens received from the electorate. I visited 26 polling booths on Saturday and everywhere I received positive feedback and was congratulated on the Greens campaign. According to our scrutineers I got the number ‘2’ vote from most of the electorate.
“I look forward to working with Rob Oakeshott particularly on promoting the opportunities for this region to be a leader in the ‘green’ economy.
