Under Tasmanian law, there is absolutely no requirement for Tasmania Police to have given the names and addresses of the Triabunna 13 to Gunns Ltd, Greens leader Bob Brown said this evening.
The late afternoon media release from Tasmania Police reveals that Tasmania Police gave Gunns Ltd the names and addresses of all 13, including those who were neither charged nor arrested and complied with all police directions.
This is a very serious infringement of the right to privacy of innocent citizens and once again calls into question who is running Tasmania, Senator Brown said.
Senator Brown said he has the utmost respect for the police who have a difficult job, not least in upholding the rights of peaceful protestors as against corporate bullies.
"But it seems that on this occasion the police have facilitated Gunns outside legal requirements and leading to a situation which breaches the privacy and infringes the rights of citizens.
"The commissioner should publish the guidelines for releasing names and addresses of citizens to private interests, not least entities like Gunns which have a litigious record," Senator Brown said.
