Urgent action needed to address violence towards women with disability

The Australian Greens said today that people will be shocked by the extent of violence towards women with disability, and will want urgent action.

"Women with disability need better support, access to services and better housing, along with national and state recognition of the problem of violence and coordinated response," Senator Rachel Siewert, Australian Greens spokesperson on disability issues said today.

"Women with disability are much more vulnerable to violence because of the circumstances of their disability, their domestic circumstances and care relationships, as outlined in the research highlighted today.

"Services and support for women with disability suffering violence must be improved and it must be accessible.

"There is a significant lack of housing and accommodation for people with disability. Inadequate or insecure accommodation makes women more vulnerable. It is clear that more accommodation support is needed for women with disability.

"It is very concerning that while it is obvious that more support for women with disability is needed the Government is now considering winding back the NDIS. DisabilityCare Australia should be a well-funded independent agency focussed on supports for people with disability," Senator Siewert concluded.
