Greens youth justice spokesperson Nina Springle says the Victorian Government need to stop blocking parliamentarians from visiting the Grevillia unit at Barwon Prison.
Ms Springle has asked to visit multiple times since November 2016 but the youth justice minister and her department have refused to comply with the requests.
New allegations of assaults by prison staff raise serious concerns that the rights of the young people detained are being violated.
“The government is trying to cover up what’s going on in Barwon Prison,” Nina Springle said.
“The secrecy is out of control. The Minister has proven that she doesn’t care about these children's rights, but she needs to stop blocking MPs from seeing what's happening in this facility,” she said.
