Greens celebrate electoral gains

07/09/2008 (All day)

Greens Leader Bob Brown says the Greens' near-win in Mayo, Rob Oakeshott's landslide in Lyne, and the 4% state-wide swing to the Greens in Western Australia spell disintegration for the two-party system in Australia.

"Had the Greens' Lynton Vonow got the column inches or TV time given the Liberals' Jamie Briggs, Mayo would have gone to the Greens," Senator Brown said.

"As it is, the seat will be decided on absentee and postal votes and we Greens are keeping our fingers crossed.

"Independent, Di Bell, is not out of the race either, and should not be discounted. The Mayo vote is clearly a sharp rebuke to Canberra over the plight of the Murray River."

Rob Oakeshott's crushing of the Nationals in Lyne means all three independents in Federal Parliament are in rural seats which should be Nationals heartland. The trend for the Nationals is towards extinction.

"The Greens vote in Western Australia will see three or four elected to the upper house and star Greens candidate Adele Carles is still in the running to win Fremantle, in the lower house, from Labor.

"This points to a near-future Greens win in Fremantle at a state or national election," Senator Brown said.
