Rudd must raise Indigenous Rights at UN Monday

Senator Rachel Siewert
22/09/2008

22nd September 2008

The Australian Greens are calling on the Prime Minister to make a statement in support of the United Nations Declaration of the Rights of Indigenous Peoples when he addresses the UN General Assembly this week.

"This is a one-off opportunity to show a new face of Australian politics when Kevin Rudd addresses the United Nations," said Senator Rachel Siewert today.

"Prime Minister Rudd opened his term with a clear stamp on domestic politics, by including a welcome to country, and giving the apology to the stolen generations. This was a signal of great change - one that should be mirrored in his first act on the international stage, with a statement in support of the UN Declaration of the Rights of Indigenous Peoples."

"There is no excuse for Mr Rudd not to deliver on this election promise at the earliest possible opportunity," concluded Senator Siewert.
