Climate change is one of the most important issues in this by-election and Bradfield voters have the opportunity to send a message to Canberra on Saturday by voting Greens, Greens candidate Susie Gemmell said today, speaking at a press conference with Australian Greens Leader Bob Brown at the Bradfield pre-poll booth in Chatswood.
"People who live in Bradfield care about the environment, about preserving our bushland and our heritage, and they care about climate change," said Ms Gemmell.
"The community shouldn't have to pay more so polluters pay less - that is what the Liberal and Labor parties are proposing.
"The Greens Safe Climate Bill will reduce Australia's emissions by 40% by 2020, will assist families to retrofit their homes for energy efficiency, making them cheaper to heat and cool while reducing their emissions at the same time.
"With the Liberal party now run by climate deniers, and Labor missing in action in Bradfield, the Greens are stepping up to offer a real local alternative.
"On Saturday voters will have an opportunity to send Canberra a message on climate change.
"We owe it to future generations to follow the best advice of the world's scientists who are finding ways to reduce the impact of global warming.
"The consequences of climate change such as extreme weather events, food and water shortages and prolonged drought will affect residents in Bradfield.
"I am asking people to consider me as their next local member, as a candidate with the best interests of my community at heart, and with an unwavering commitment to real action on climate change.
"I entered politics to help create a better future for our children. I'm asking voters in Bradfield to give me that privilege on Saturday," said Ms Gemmell.
