About

Born 29 May 1976 in Mparntwe-Alice Springs, Barbara’s father is Kaytetye-Arrernte and her mother is Warlpiri-Warramungu. She has strong family connections from the South Australian border right up to Borroloola.

Barb grew up and went to school in Mparntwe-Alice Springs. She completed year 12 and has since studied Business and Commercial Management at Batchelor College where she attained Certificate IV.

Barbara has two children, Connie and Danae, and cares for two others, and they live on Mount Nancy Town Camp.

Barbara is a member of the Indigenous People’s Organisation and in May 2008 was a participant in a delegation of who attended the 7th Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues which focussed on climate change and cultural diversity.  In April 2009 the United Nations High Commissioner on Human Rights invited Barbara to attend the Durban Review conference in Geneva which discussed racial discrimination, xenophobia and other related intolerances.

Barbara has participated in a Diplomacy Training Programme on Human Rights and facilitated workshops and led protests around the Intervention. As an Aboriginal person directly affected by the NTER (Intervention) Barbara was instrumental in setting up the Prescribed Area People’s Alliance.  She has led delegations of prescribed area people to convergences in Canberra and Darwin, to highlight to parliamentarians, supporters and the wider community the negative effects of the Intervention on Indigenous Territorians. 

She was a candidate for the Alice Springs Town Council local government elections in 2008.

She has been a supporter of the Greens for number of years working closely with local Greens members as well as the Federal Greens Senators on issues such as the Intervention and the Muckaty Waste Dump.
