Ian was born and raised in Lake Macquarie and his career began in the mining & steel industries where he worked as a metallurgist.  A career change to agricultural development quickly followed after completing degrees in agricultural science and development economics. For the next 20 years Ian mainly worked in the Asia Pacific region on projects in PNG, Solomon Islands & Vietnam for AusAID, UNDP & The World Bank. Ian owned and operated a plant nursery and landscaping business whilst living in the USA.

In 2007, Ian and his wife Tin initiated the Kendall-Kadaw Friendship School in Burma, raising over $40 000 from the local community.
