Paterson

About

Jan Davis is an experienced and committed Green who has campaigned in the Hunter and surrounding areas for many years.  Her interests include sustainable development, ending the degradation caused by coal mining, and ensuring the region’s water is used wisely.

Jan has lived in the Hunter area for forty years.  She has an adult family and two grandchildren.  Jan is passionate about ensuring our planet is protected for future generations against the destructive forces of climate change, coastal degradation and rampant over development. She believes in community based solutions to the contemporary challenges faced by our society.

Jan has worked hard to further environmental issues for over thirty years.  Her concerns about the care of vulnerable and disadvantaged people in our region, opposing discrimination against women and children, and adequate public housing form a key part of the Greens campaign in Paterson.

Jan will work to stop the implementation of the Tillegra Dam proposal, the Williams River must run free to the Ramsar designated Hunter Wetlands to make sure the environment is not destroyed as well as the fishing industry that depends on the nursery effect of these Wetlands.

Policies

The transition from coal and oil dependence to clean energy solutions, creating new green jobs, will be a boon for the Hunter, Port Stephens and the Great Lakes areas.  We need to protect our region from the worst effects of climate change - sea level rises and greater storm and flood damage.

More frequently storm events will leave the transport networks that serve Newcastle, Port Stephens and Great Lakes major population areas vulnerable to damage.  We need new rail lines, upgrades to existing lines and more efficient public bus services to better serve local communities and to mitigate the risk of our region’s transport system being cut off for extended periods after severe storms.

Long term planning for population health in our major centres is a key concern.  Health data shows higher asthma and respiratory disease levels in the Hunter community due to pollution from coal mines. Aged care and accommodation will be especially urgent for future residents, as Paterson has more people retiring to our areas.  Increased mental health services remains a priority for Paterson.
