Candidate for Leichhardt

About

Neville St John Wood grew up in Brisbane and moved to Cairns in 1974.

He has lived on 2ha of land amid the Daintree since 1986,  and spends time rehabilitating the rainforest on his previously degraded property.

Fishing and bushwalking number among his interests.

He also loves travelling to many areas of Australia "to experience the true beauty of our natural environment".

A seasoned campaigner to protect the Daintree from over-development, Neville also works part-time as a marine tour guide upon the Daintree River.

Policies

Neville and the Greens support the following action in Leichhardt:

1. Reef protection:

  • Take immediate steps to reduce the effects of climate change and stop acidification of the Great Barrier Reef
  • Phase out dangerous chemicals that damage the reef
  • Better monitor large ships using reef waters by compulsory installation of satellite trackers

2. Give whatever assistance is needed to the people of the Torres Strait to lessen the effects of climate change and rising sea levels on their island homelands.

3. Allocate funding to purchase more land in the Daintree Rainforest, to protect the habitat of the endangered cassowary and other wildlife and ecosystems in the area.

4. Establish a light rail network to the southern outskirts of Cairns to relieve traffic congestion and improve air quality during peak periods.
