Candidate for Flinders

About

Long time Mornington Peninsula resident Bob Brown has been chosen for the second Federal election, running as the Greens candidate for Flinders.  Not to be confused with the Greens leader Bob Brown, ‘the other Bob Brown’, as he is often referred to is the popular singer/songwriter and co writer of the classic Australian song, “Give Me a Home Among the Gumtrees”.

Bob believes the Greens are the only party looking towards the future and its importance for both current and future generations.  “The world is very much at a cross road at the moment and choosing the wrong policy solutions are likely to have dire consequences. The way we are currently living is quite unsustainable both environmentally and economically.”

Policies

  • Australia to achieve a reduction of greenhouse emissions from 1990 levels by a minimum of 40% by 2020 with zero emissions by 2050;
  • Phasing out coal based electricity generation in favour of renewable sources such as wind, solar, geothermal, tidal and bio fuels;
  • Providing increased levels of finance for research and development funding and education funding to foster technological solutions to our looming energy crisis and the rapid approach of ‘peak oil’;
  • Significantly increasing the stringency of Minimum Energy Performance Standards (MEPS) for products, buildings and infrastructure;
  • Introduction of a carbon tax.

Among the other issues I would like to see:

  • An independent foreign policy and an immediate withdrawal of all military personal from Afghanistan;
  • An increase in old age pensions and disability benefits;
  • Sustainable agriculture and protection of catchments, rivers, wetlands, esturaries and groundwater systems;
  • A population policy based on sustainability and quality of life for all Australians, both present and future;
  • Free tertiary education;
  • An economy that is not dependent on corporate profit and unrealistic growth.
