Candidate for Gorton

About

I have lived in the Western Suburbs all my life and worked as a postie for 25 years, last working in the Ardeer Delivery Centre.  I retired this year to be a carer for my mother. I went to local schools and Footscray Technical College (as it was called then) with later studies in land conservation at RMIT and Victoria University.

Having been involved in environmental issues for a long time, I have been an active member of The Greens for 10 years. I have been President of Friends of Stony creek for six years, working to improve the condition of that creek. I have worked on many local government committees and I am actively involved in issues such as Westlink, greening areas of the local community, protecting open space, and supporting local community groups.

Through this work I have become aware that local interests are often ignored and badly handled . There is a great need to provide solutions for climate change that can be applied on the local level such as solar power programs, household energy efficiency and improving public transport and bicycle paths to provide sustainable transport options.  We need to create and protect open space, protect natural wilderness and provide adequate national funding for such programs

Policies

The Greens are providing practical solutions for the real world at all levels of government.  We have a positive plan for:

  • Action on climate change, with legislated targets and a carbon price to drive clean energy and jobs;
  • A universal preventative health care system with publicly-funded primary dental care and increased funding for mental health;
  • A world-class public education system, including two years free pre-school for all children;
  • An effective, comfortable public transport system that triples passenger number by 2020.
