WA Greens historic win in Fremantle By-Election
The Australian Greens congratulate the efforts of The Greens (WA) and candidate Adele Carles (pictured) who has won a historic by-election in Fremantle.
It is the first time the Greens have ever beaten the ALP on primary votes.
“The people of Fremantle have put the port city on the map, giving the Greens their first seat in the WA Legislative Assembly,” Adele said at the election night party.
Greens continue good form in Vic Council elections.
On 29 November all 79 of Victoria's Local Governments went to the polls. The Victorian Greens ran a record 95 candidates across the state, and early results suggest there will be many more Greens Councillors for the 2008-2012 local government term, some in places where Greens have never been elected before, like Queenscliffe, Port Phillip, Surf Coast and Glen Eira. In Yarra Ranges, Greens Councillor Samantha Dunn has been re-elected with more than 50% of the vote, and Greens have been returned to Melbourne, Yarra and Moreland City Councils. The Greens vote has doubled in parts of Brimbank and Banyule.
In Melbourne, Greens Lord Mayor candidate Adam Bandt (pictured) ran an excellent campaign, coming second in the primary vote. It appears Labor preferences to the Liberal Party meant The Greens could not get over the line.

ACT Greens pick up 4th seat.
The ACT Electoral Commission has just announced that the ACT Greens Molonglo candidate Caroline Le Couteur has won a fourth Greens seat in the ACT Legislative Assembly.
Caroline joins Amanda Bresnan in Brindabella, Meredith Hunter in Ginninderra, and Shane Rattenbury who was also elected in the seat of Molonglo. Labor has seven seats, the Liberals six and the Greens have four seats.
ACT Greens: 3 maybe 4 new MPs
On Saturday the ACT elected at least three, and possibly four Greens MLAs to the new Legislative Assembly. The Greens’ vote was 15.7% across the ACT (a swing of 6.4%) and the Greens will now hold the balance of power.
With 86% of votes counted at 2pm on Monday afternoon, it is clear that Amanda Bresnan has been elected in Brindabella, Meredith Hunter has been elected in Ginninderra, and Shane Rattenbury has been elected in Molonglo. There is a chance that either Caroline Le Couteur or Elena Kirschbaum will pick up a fourth seat for the Greens in Molonglo, but this result is not likely to be known for some time.
Australia becoming Greener - Brown
The Australian Greens say the triumphant ACT election result adds to a growing list of electoral watersheds, as Australians turn to the Greens in ever-greater numbers.
ACT Greens storm into likely balance of power
With 80% of the vote counted, The ACT Greens have managed to produce a significant swing of 6.6% polling just under 16%. The Greens are set to win 3 seats, one in each electorate, most likely holding the balance of power in the Legislative Assembly.
In the electorate of Molonglo The Greens have won a seat outright, polling 18.7% up 6.9%, ensuring Shane Rattenbury a seat. In the electorate of Brindabella The Greens have polled 13.8% up 6.5% giving Amanda Bresnan a likely seat, and in Ginninderra The Greens polled 14.4% up 5.9 which gives Meredith Hunter a very likely seat.
Congratulations to the ACT Greens, especially to the candidates, staff, supporters and all the hard working volunteers.

The collapse of Labor's vote in some inner city areas and the increase in the Greens vote in a number of local government areas by more than 15 per cent sends a strong message to the Rees government, Greens MP Lee Rhiannon said.

"The results in in the inner city areas of Marrickville and Leichhardt where the Greens outpolled Labor are encouraging for the state election.

Greens celebrate electoral gains
Greens Leader Bob Brown says the Greens' near-win in Mayo, Rob Oakeshott's landslide in Lyne, and the 4% state-wide swing to the Greens in Western Australia spell disintegration for the two-party system in Australia.
"Had the Greens' Lynton Vonow got the column inches or TV time given the Liberals' Jamie Briggs, Mayo would have gone to the Greens," Senator Brown said.
