$2bn tent-city on Nauru

Tuesday, September 3, 2013

The Parliamentary Budget Office has said a 2,000 person tent-city on Nauru would cost $1.93 billion over the forward estimates.

“The old parties’ offshore detention regimes are massively expensive, but it’s the cost of human suffering that is truly heart breaking.” the Greens’ immigration spokesperson, Senator Sarah Hanson-Young said.

“Two billion dollars of tax payer money is going to be spent on destroying vulnerable people in appalling, inhumane conditions on Nauru if Tony Abbott takes control of the Parliament.

“The Greens will do everything we can to stop this from happening, but if Tony Abbott becomes Prime Minister and takes control of the Senate at the same time he will be able to do whatever he likes.

“It is essential that the Greens remain as a strong force in the Senate if we are going to stop the cruelty and stop the waste, and that is why our campaign in South Australia is so important.

“The Coalition are doing everything they can to hide the price of their policies, but the Australian people deserve to know the true cost of the cruelty that their tax dollar is funding.”
