The government’s cuts to marine park protections will strip back highest-level protections in a host of sensitive marine areas, including waters near the Great Barrier Reef. We need ocean champions now more than ever!
Our oceans cover more than 70% of our planet, store more than 90% of the world’s carbon dioxide and include some of the most fragile ecosystems and species on Earth. As Sir David Attenborough recently said, “they are under pressure as never before in history.”
The science tells us that one of the most effective means of protecting marine and coastal biodiversity is through the establishment and effective management of Marine Protected Areas (MPAs). MPAs are essential to help protect our oceans which are continuously threatened by human activity.
In spite of this, over the last five years Tony Abbott and Malcolm Turnbull have recklessly axed environmental protections and this disallowance vote was the first chance for the federal parliament to formally register its opposition to one of the most retrograde steps by any government anywhere in protecting the marine environment.
Join our campaign to defend sensitive marine parks from destructive overfishing.
