Lauren Zwaans

Candidate for Hartley

I’m a small business owner and a mother-of-one, and I’ve spent most of my life living in Adelaide’s eastern suburbs.

I currently run my own communications consultancy, KIS Communications, support my husband with the running of his small business, and spend the rest of my time chasing after my energetic toddler.

I studied a Bachelor of International Studies and a Master of Arts (Journalism) before commencing my full-time working life as a journalist with The Advertiser. As the imperative to combat climate change and protect our natural environment grew stronger, I was drawn to the Greens, and fell into politics as a Media Adviser, working for the Honourable Tammy Franks MLC. It was extraordinary working for a woman who brought a progressive voice and much-needed diversity to the South Australian Parliament. We campaigned for equal rights for the LGBTI community, compensation for Australia’s first people, and cancer compensation for volunteer firefighters - a campaign that was finally won.

I have also worked extensively in marketing roles in the not-for-profit and private sectors. This included a year spent living in London, where I worked as a sub-editor for Burberry. A passionate advocate for gender equality, I returned to Australia at the end of 2014 and launched Spence Club: a networking club for young female professionals from South Australia to stay connected in a bid to combat the well-publicised “brain drain” of young women from our state.

However, it was during my stint at Uniting Communities that I met people daily who reminded me that we have a long way to go to address the inequalities that we face as a society. From people with a disability who were struggling on tiny pensions, to families who couldn’t keep up with their bills due to cost of living pressures, it became clearer than ever that only the Greens would put the needs of everyday South Australians ahead of vested interests.

With a strong history of standing up for people and the planet, only the Greens have a positive vision for South Australia’s future long beyond the next election cycle. I am proud to represent the Greens in the seat of Hartley.
