Greens will block Abbott’s expanded agenda of environmental destruction

The Australian Greens will vote against Tony Abbott's expanded plans to gut environment protection, announced today.

"Not only does Tony Abbott want to put state governments in complete control of national environment protections, he now wants to slash state environment protections as well," Senator Larissa Waters, Australian Greens environment spokesperson, said.

"Buried in Tony Abbott's policy document announced today are plans for a complete review of all state and federal environment protections to identify anything ‘unworkable'.

"What Tony Abbott's big business buddies find ‘unworkable' is anything that stands in the way of their own private profits and Tony Abbott wants to let them write their own rules.

"The Greens will vote against any attempt by Tony Abbott to weaken environment protection.

"Labor has done nothing to strengthen environmental law to keep federal protections in place, despite the Greens' repeated attempts in Parliament to Abbott-proof our national environment law.

"The Greens are the only party Australians can trust on the environment and we will stand up to the ruthless anti-environment agenda of Tony Abbott," Senator Waters said.
