Transforming Melbourne's tram network

2018-10-01

The Victorian Greens have released a plan to transform Melbourne's tram network. All tram routes will be upgraded over a decade to include level access stops along entire routes, better separation from traffic and traffic light priority.

The Greens' plan would also see the manufacture of 30 new high capacity trams every year for the next 10 years, triple the current rate of production.

Quotes attributable to Victorian Greens spokesperson for Transport, Sam Hibbins

"Melbournians love our trams, but right now too many of them are overcrowded, slow and un-accessible. We need investment right now to transform the network.

"The busiest and most overcrowded routes will be upgraded first, with level access stops along the entire route, better separation from traffic and traffic light priority. It means better access, more reliability and a better experience for passengers.

"The Greens' investment in new high capacity trams will also be on the track sooner by supercharging the manufacturing process right here in Melbourne."

Quotes attributable to Victorian Greens member for Northcote, Lidia Thorpe.

"Over 13 million commuters use the 86 tram every year, however upgrades have stalled and too many commuters are suffering from overcrowded trams and inaccessible stops.

"People in Northcote are tired of trams running late and when they do arrive, having to squeeze on and try and find standing room. We need this investment and it needs to happen now."
