In NSW, people who have an abortion – and their doctors – still risk prosecution.

In this day and age, it’s unconscionable that pregnant people in our state do not have the right to bodily autonomy without devastating legal consequences. In fact, NSW is one of the few remaining states in Australia where abortion legislation is still stuck in the dark ages.

Abortions should be safe, free and legal – because they are matter of health and welfare, not a criminal issue.

The Greens will:

  • Decriminalise abortion by removing division 12 of the NSW Crimes Act 1900. Currently, convictions under this law can result in up to 10 years’ imprisonment – and a woman was convicted as recently as 2017.
  • Provide publicly-funded and accessible abortions. Right now, there are no publicly-funded abortion services in NSW, and existing services are limited, privatised and expensive. We will provide access to surgical abortions in public hospitals and fully fund abortion services through Medicare.
  • Say no to Zoe’s law. The Greens will vote against dangerous foetal personhood laws, which undermine reproductive rights and access to health services.

It’s well past time for NSW to change its abortion laws. Sign the petition to right this wrong.
