Violence against women in Australia is more than an epidemic – it’s a national emergency.

On average, one woman is murdered each week in this country  – often by her current or former partner. Violence against women has huge, devastating impacts on both the individual and the community, as well as enormous social costs.

And it has to stop.

We urgently need more funding to vital frontline services – which the NSW Liberal Government is actively slashing – and we need to address the root cause of the problem as a culture.

The Greens will:

  • Implement a broad program for gender equality. We will invest in prevention programs to challenge the deeply ingrained attitudes and social norms that give rise to men’s violence against women.
  • Introduce a holistic whole-of-government approach to tackling family violence. We will implement all 49 ‘Safe State’ recommendations of the NSW Women’s Alliance – including decriminalising abortion by abolishing Division 12 of the Crimes Act.
  • Provide immediate and ongoing support for those experiencing violence. We will provide an additional $30 million per year for specialist women’s legal services and community legal centres.
  • Provide specialist services for women from different backgrounds. We will provide $310 million over four years for specialist domestic and family violence services and state-wide crisis services.

We cannot afford to continue as we are on this critical issue. Sign our petition now – women’s lives depend on it.
