Dr Mehreen Faruqi's journey to become a Senator has defied what others thought was possible.
Mehreen has constantly broken boundaries - both politically and professionally - and her achievements have been remarkable.
Since migrating from Pakistan in 1992 with her young family, she has focused on developing real solutions to social and environmental challenges. With a PhD in Environmental Engineering, Mehreen has been a leader in the field of Environmental Sustainability.
Mehreen became the first Muslim woman in any Australian parliament when she joined the NSW Legislative Council in 2013. She introduced the first ever Bill to decriminalise abortion in NSW - and led campaigns to ban Greyhound racing, protect biodiversity, and stop the privatisation of roads and public transport.
Mehreen has also repeatedly uncovered Government secrets, in keeping with her firm belief that “our community deserves open, transparent and participatory democracy".
