Andrew Bartlett

Candidate for Clayfield

Hi! I'm Andrew, and I believe we deserve better & can do better.

Politics is not working for the vast majority of us. Our families, our friends and our community deserves better.

With the country now in the worst recession most of us have ever experienced, we need to do all we can to reverse high unemployment, along with putting an end to the poor wages, insecure jobs and underemployment that so many have experienced for far too long.

We can come out of this recession as a better society. But only if we change a system that for too long has favoured the few over the many, benefiting a small number of insiders while leaving more and more of us on the outer.

We can generate jobs, improve services, reverse inequality and address the growing threat of climate change. But only if we repair our badly damaged political system.

I believe we can change politics so it works with and delivers for all of us, rather than delivering favours for the few who can afford big donations to get insider treatment. The Greens do not support and will not accept any corporate donations.

I grew up in Clayfield and went to school at Wooloowin and Albion. I later lived at Windsor while raising a daughter, and now live at Lutwyche.

Our electorate is very diverse. Many parts of it have suffered from poor development, with the short-term interests of properly developers put above the views and needs of the community. Many of our local railway stations & public transport infrastructure needs major improvement. Many areas suffer from insufficient green space and excessive traffic.

I have a wide range of experiences outside of politics, including social worker, school teacher, finance officer, advocate and researcher. I am currently a small business owner, running a cafe in Fortitude Valley.

I also have a long record of volunteer work in the community. I have a special interest in supporting the local music scene. I have been on the Board of Directors of community radio station 4ZZZ for many years.

I served as a Senator for Queensland for the Australian Democrats party for nearly 11 years, and more recently served as a Senator again with the Greens.

My public record, in politics and my work in the community, shows I stay true to my beliefs and consistently work with people on the issues that directly affect us and our families and friends.
