Hi, I’m Michaela, your Greens candidate for Walter Taylor.
I grew up in Taringa, went to school in Indooroopilly and university in St Lucia, and now I’m raising my two children with my husband here. Professionally I have been an international aid and development worker for more than 20 years, working with communities and all levels of government to plan for better development and access to services.
I see the opportunity to be your local Councillor as a continuation of that work, consulting with the community to fight for better outcomes on development, local infrastructure and public space.
I know that we are a stronger community when we work together and I have played an active role in the Ironside and Indooroopilly State High school P&Cs. After School Care Committees and the local community garden, as well as organising community events that bring people together such as fetes and trivia evenings.
The community expects Brisbane City Council to plan for a healthy and sustainable community, but poor planning has led to issues that were highlighted during COVID-19 lockdowns and the devastating 2022 floods. Lack of access to parks, inadequate public transport, unsafe building planning, lack of community hubs and poorly connected bike paths need to be addressed.
Our community wants someone to listen and respond to their concerns. We need to move towards a sustainable future that addresses the needs of children, right through to those of our seniors residents. We want our community to develop in a way that demonstrates our diverse values, respects First Nations culture, promotes local business and creates jobs and opportunities, while protecting our environment.
While corporate donors influence the major parties, as your Councillor I’d be beholden only to our community, and will always fight for you. I’m so excited to get to work, learning about your concerns and how I can best represent you.
