A better way to look after our food production

South Australia has some of the best food and wine in the world. Agriculture and food production contribute billions of dollars to our state economy.

We need to protect prime farmland from mining, oil and gas extraction including ‘fracking’ for unconventional gas, which can affect soil, groundwater and surface water quality.

The Greens believe people want to make more informed choices about the food we buy. We want to know where our food comes from, how nutritious it is and whether it is free of genetically modified organisms. We want the option to select produce from small and local producers.

Taking action

The Greens will help South Australian farmers protect their land and help consumers buy local products.

The Greens will:

  • Ban hydraulic fracturing (‘fracking’) for unconventional gas on farmland;
  • Legislate better protection for farmers from open cut mining on agricultural land;
  • Protect valuable productive farmland from urban sprawl;
  • Protect farmers against losses resulting from the spread of genetically modified crops from neighbouring properties by making genetic patent holders liable for damage;
  • Require labelling of genetically modified organisms in food;
  • Fight for a fairer allocation of River Murray water for the environment and for efficient local irrigators;
  • Progressively reduce Adelaide’s reliance on River Murray water through initiatives such as metropolitan-wide stormwater harvesting, to provide more water for the environment and for food-producing irrigators in South Australia;
  • Support development of local community gardens and farmers markets, to increase access to fresh healthy food and people’s connection with food;
  • Work with Aboriginal communities, especially in northern and remote SA, to build locally-owned and controlled food production facilities;
  • Promote community understanding of the problem of food waste and the effect of arbitrary cosmetic standards for fruit and vegetables; and
  • Promote more research into the impacts of agriculture on climate change and adaptation of agriculture to climate change.
