Greens MP slams federal Member for homophobic comments

Wednesday, August 23, 2017

Greens member for Eastern Metropolitan Region, Samantha Dunn, has hit out at a Coalition government MP over degrading remarks made to Sky News. Federal MP and Member for Menzies, Kevin Andrews, likened same-sex couples to 'cycling mates' in discussions over the marriage equality postal vote.

Representing an area encompassing Mr Andrews' electorate, Ms Dunn took to state parliament to rebuke his comments and offer solidarity and condolences to the LGBTQIA+ community.

"For some this is the first time they have truly feared being themselves in public and the first time they have been afraid of holding a lover's hand or sharing a kiss", said Ms Dunn, speaking on reported increases in depression and anxiety in recent weeks.

"I will not stay silent while the federal member for Menzies derides the real love shared between many LGBTIQA+ couples in the Eastern Metropolitan Region", she added.
