From libraries to sporting facilities, to maternal health, childcare, road maintenance, bike paths, home community care support and waste management - local councils provide many valuable services for their local communities.
This is why the Greens oppose the introduction of an arbitrary rate cap on council income. We will continue to advocate for local governments to prepare budgets in consultation with local constituents, without being subject to bureaucratic intervention from state government. In a climate of cut-backs to local government funding from other tiers of government, the proposed rate cap raises a real risk of severe cuts to local government services that will hit hard in communities that need essential services most.
Local Government enhances democracy and is ideally placed to build vibrant local communities.
