Victorian Greens take responsibility for Batman loss, pledge to do better.

The Australian Greens (Victoria) State Council has received a report into the Batman by-election and accepted its recommendation to review and improve the party’s conflict resolution procedures.

AGV Co-Convenor Rose Read said:

“Unresolved internal conflict within the Darebin Branch played a key role in a disappointing outcome in Batman and on Saturday the State Council acknowledged its responsibility for managing conflict.  State Council has resolved to ensure the Party is equipped to resolve these issues more quickly and more effectively in future.

“Greens supporters expect and deserve better than this.

“The report highlighted significant weaknesses in our disputes resolution process. This process will be urgently reformed, in-line with the review’s recommendations, so the Party settles complaints in a professional, confidential and timely fashion.

“The report also recommended independent management of the Darebin branch with a focus on conflict resolution and good governance.

“State Council, including those Darebin branch members who sit on the Council, acknowledged the need for action at the branch level and resolved to work with the branch members to achieve this outcome. Despite any reporting to the contrary, no action relating to branch management will be taken without the input of the members of the branch. Our commitment to the Party's grassroots remains as strong as ever.

“We have the right policies to win Batman and by taking responsibility to improve our internal processes, we can advance the Greens vision for Victoria.”
