Hi, I’m Charles Pratt, and I’m the Greens candidate for Bassendean this election. As a tradesman, community volunteer and proud union member, I am passionate about grassroots democracy and ensuring that we’re building a future for all of us.
As a local, I strongly believe our sense of community is unparalleled in Perth. I volunteer with the repair cafe and the community cinema, and love to frequent our small businesses. I am acutely aware of the challenges we face post COVID-19, with many Bassendean locals working in essential services, and many more having lost their jobs. As a blue collar worker, the Government's response to the economic crisis has shown us that they have always had the means to pull people out of poverty and fully fund the services people need. They've just chosen not to.
Having worked in mining and construction for over a decade, I have seen first hand the impacts of the oil and gas industry on our precious places. I’ve always believed in listening to the experts, and the scientific consensus has been for a long time that we need to act fast on the climate crisis. We have the tools, expertise and the money, but we lack the political will to move away from coal, oil and gas.
By allowing the very same corporations that are destroying our climate to fund their election campaigns the major parties are putting their own interests above those of the people they are supposed to represent. Big donations mean big influence. They’ve repeatedly protected corporate profit instead of community interests, and we’re sick of it.
I am a proud Union member, and strongly believe that Labor have left behind the working class communities in Western Australia. We are at the intersection of the COVID-19 crisis and the climate emergency, and both the Labor and Liberal parties are more interested in taking donations from their corporate mates than funding the things we need to live a good life and tackling climate change head on.
Bold government investments now will drive our economy into the future; create jobs and ensuring everyone has the essential services they need to live a good life. The Greens have a plan to transition us to 100% renewable energy, creating thousands of jobs in local manufacturing and green infrastructure industries.
This State Election, there is so much we need to fight for. We have the opportunity to create jobs for West Australians and urgently tackle the climate crisis. Bold government investments now will drive our economy into the future; create jobs and ensuring everyone has the essential services they need to live a good life.
I’m so excited to spend the next eight months out in our community, running a grassroots campaign to build a future for all of us. See you out there!
