Elizabeth Kamara

Candidate for Butler

I’m Elizabeth Kamara, your Greens candidate for Butler this election.

I’m a lawyer, who arrived from Sierra Leone 19 years ago. The Butler electorate has been home to me, my husband and our daughter for close to four years.

I want to make a difference as we face the big problems and challenges of climate change, growing inequality, living in a world with Covid-19, security, housing, education and good health care for everyone. I am running as a Greens candidate because we care about these issues. We don’t take corporate donations which allows us to focus on action for the community, and not for developers or other big business donors.

The Butler electorate is a beautiful area with lovely beaches, and I love going for a walk around our local parks. I can't wait to meet members of the community and listen to your concerns and views. How can we make this electorate a better place for everyone? How can we improve access to good healthcare, high quality education and affordable housing? Like 40% of the electorate, I am a migrant familiar with the challenges of resettling in a new country. I am committed to better settlement services for new migrants. I am looking forward to representing the diversity of our multicultural community in parliament.

I entered the law because I believe the law can right wrongs and protect the vulnerable. I have helped low income earners complete their tax returns, supported Aboriginal clients with native title related matters and negotiated agreements, worked as an adviser in natural resources and environmental issues in Sierra Leone. As a volunteer at a community legal centre, I am now providing advice to women across WA on family law related matters.

My husband is a dedicated specialist in obstetrics and gynaecology. My daughter enjoys her classes and friends at a nearby school. She also enjoys playing netball. I am proud to say she has just been awarded the spirit of netball by our local netball club. As a family we enjoy chatting with other parents at netball games and cheering the girls on!

Over the years, I have faced challenges, setbacks, rejections. I didn’t give up. I will bring this resilient nature to my role as your representative for Butler. You can rely on me to get things done, together we can make the changes we desire - try me!
