Hi, I’m Lauren Rickert, your Greens candidate for Kwinana this election.
I’ve been an active member of the Kwinana community for 17 years now as a volunteer for community sustainability and social inclusivity projects.
My passion lies in ending homelessness, and preventing suicide and self harm. This was first sparked by my travels in Canada many years ago, I was shocked by the homelessness there, people begged on the streets and slept at traffic lights. I came home with a determination to not have that happen here in Kwinana. I’ve since achieved a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology with a postgraduate in Social Impact.
I have worked with people in homelessness for the past 14 years; in youth, mental health and domestic violence. Without a home or stable community, it’s hard to make connections. I believe that everyone should have access to affordable housing and high quality health and mental care, with a strong safety net that looks after us all.
COVID-19 has impacted the community of Kwinana by isolating its people. A sense of community is so important to the fabric of society, and when this is taken away from us it is hard not to feel lost. But this crisis has also given us an opportunity to invest in community wellbeing like never before, we could rebuild our communities with the things that ensure we all have what we need to live a good life – affordable housing, good mental healthcare and great public services.
I believe we must take urgent action to stop climate change. We can’t keep denying that it’s here and having an impact already. It’s not too late to solve the climate crisis, but we need to act now to protect our future and the future of generations to come.
Community is so important to me, I live, work and play here in Kwinana and I strongly believe that together we can build a better future for us all. I can’t wait to connect with you all and work together to enrich our community.
