I’m Dr Mark Brogan, your Greens candidate for South Perth this election.
I’m a long-term resident of South Perth who has been campaigning on heritage, planning and the environment for as long as I have lived here.
I am a vocal opponent of planning reforms that have removed the voice of the community from planning decisions. I have taken action to protect the valuable wetlands of Salter Point, and I played a role in the creation of the WA Heritage Act in the 1990s, which provides the basis of the legal protection for heritage places that remain today.
My journey has been one of education and learning. I taught and researched information science and technology at Edith Cowan University until 2016. I have a PhD in electronic commerce, and a master's degree in science and technology policy.
I grew up in a working class family here in Perth. I came to appreciate the transformative power of education and the importance of affordable, accessible university education. I paid no university fees and received a study allowance from the Government sufficient to live on. It was a world away from the harsh reality of higher education today.
COVID-19 has impacted many parts of our community with many households experiencing the crushing reality of low or under employment and housing affordability stress. My early life was lived in the shadow of mortgage stress, an experience that left me with a clear understanding of the importance of reliable employment and affordable housing.
When I first took an interest in climate science, Perth received 20% more rainfall on average than it receives today. As a kid, I recall Mundaring Dam overflowing from rainfall. Now its level is artificially maintained. We now live with the reality of catastrophic bushfire seasons and more extreme weather conditions. Science is unequivocal about the need for drastic, transformative action. We are adaptive, clever people, and we can do it with the right political leadership.
COVID-19 is awful. But it has given us a once in a generation opportunity, to reset our economy, provide good jobs and solve the climate crisis. The journey to a better more secure future for South Perth is about seizing the opportunity for overdue change.
I am excited to be a part of a grassroots movement of people fighting for a new more sustainable and resilient future for all of us. I look forward to having many conversations with the community of South Perth about how we can work together to make this vision a reality.
