Hi, I’m Tim Young, and I’m your Greens candidate for Victoria Park this election. As a scientist, an educator, and passionate advocate for others, I have lived and worked in our Victoria Park community for over 15 years. Right now, we’re facing a dual crisis of COVID-19 and the climate emergency, with both threatening our way of life.
As a long term resident of Victoria Park, I see the challenges our community faces every day.
My heart swells with pride with every small business that finds success along our cafe strips, and I am constantly in awe of how our community bands together to support those who are struggling. However, the rising cost of living paired with under-employment is putting many of us in difficult and dangerous situations. Small businesses are being forced to close their doors while the big corporations continue to reap the benefits of tax cuts and loopholes that send Australian dollars offshore. High unemployment, combined with an unregulated gig economy, is forcing our young people to work insecure jobs, with many falling below the minimum wage.
I have spent years as a researcher in astrophysics, working to understand our place in the universe, and as a scientist teaching other scientists how to keep our work ethical. I’m often asked if there’s another version of this world. I want you to know that there is, and it’s readily available if we work together to take back our democracy and listen to the experts who are ready with solutions.
I understand that meaningful action on climate change matters to many of us. Instead of listening to the majority of Western Australians who are calling for action, the McGowan Labor Government is taking hundreds of thousands of dollars in donations from oil and gas corporations. By allowing the very same corporations that are destroying our climate to fund their election campaigns the major parties are putting their own interests above those of the people they are supposed to represent.
I have seen the ingenuity and drive that exists in our community, and I know that together, we can solve every problem that we face. By joining the Greens I’ve found a movement of people calling for a strong and caring economy. With bold Government investments, I know we can reshape our communities to ensure we all have what we need to live a good life.
It’s time to return our democracy to the people. It’s time for us to take back our future together. I’m so excited that the Greens are running a bold, grassroots campaign that is by people, for people. Over the next few months I’ll be having conversations with our community, and listening to what they need - see you out there!
