Northern Gas Pipeline supply failure

2024-03-20

Context:

This latest disruption to the NGP demonstrates that spending large amounts of taxpayer dollars on gas infrastructure is an unwise and wasteful use of public money. Gas supply is already unreliable and will continue to become more unreliable and more expensive over time.

To ensure energy security for the NT and Australia’s future, we must be investing in renewables now, and not wasting any further money on a dying gas industry.

The Territory has four unconnected solar farms which PWC should be prioritised over gas, in order to provide energy reliability and lower power costs for consumers.

Lines attributable to Kat McNamara NT Greens Candidate for Nightcliff:

“The Environment Centre NT’s Recharging the Territory report shows a clear pathway forward, as did the NT Government’s own Roadmap to Renewables before it. These reports demonstrate that we can secure the grid, take charge of our own energy security and address the cost of living.”

We are losing the renewables race by continuing to prop up the dying gas industry.”

“The Power and Water Corporation must take this moment as a line in the sand - it is time to focus on renewables and cease attempts to be a entrepreneur in the dying gas industry”

“We know we have the technology to switch to renewables. South Australia, Tasmania and the ACT are approaching 100% renewable energy. It’s time for the Territory to ditch expensive and unreliable gas and modernise our energy system with renewables. It is time for representatives like the Greens who have the political courage to say no to the gas industry.”
