ACT Greens amplify community call for an all abilities recreation space in Melba

2021-11-09

Today, Jo Clay MLA is tabling a community petition from Melba community members, calling for the ACT government to build an inclusive nature-based playground and recreation space that will stand the test of time against climate change and set an example for the rest of Canberra.

“I’m really pleased to table this petition. The Greens know that when communities come together and share their visions for their neighbourhoods, great things emerge,” said Jo Clay MLA, ACT Greens Member for Ginninderra.

“The Melba community have rallied around this project for an inclusive learning environment and playspace in their community. Participatory democracy is all about listening deeply to the community. When there is a group so clearly stating their needs, we should listen.

“There are so many reasons why this proposal is great. An all abilities playground helps every member of the community to participate, supporting our neighbours who have children with disabilities to play with their friends and be included in their community.

“The proposal is also a fantastic use of green space. SMILE have thought through a playspace that is climate friendly and will last into the future. We need to preserve our green spaces in this way, to plan for climate change and allow people to enjoy their neighbourhoods rather than jumping in the car to go elsewhere.

“This would be a great fit for the ongoing program of work the ACT Government is doing around its Play Spaces Strategy and community consultation.

Tim Kirsopp and Hector Contreras are neighbours who founded the campaign:

“I have been here for eleven years and I always walked my dogs past the unused space. When I had my own family I thought, what’s going on here?” said Hector.

“It started as an idea, but after we made the Facebook page it snowballed. The Belconnen community council has backed us the whole way.

“We may have backyards, but you don’t get to be a part of your community in your backyard. We want to reclaim this space for the community, to help it grow.” said Tim.

“From what I’m hearing, there are not many inclusive play spaces in Canberra at all. This will set the standard for the rest of the city.

“I know it’s a big proposal, but this is a long term goal. We just want to get something started for future generations to enjoy.”

The petition calls for approx. 1400m² of land next to the Melba High School to be upgraded to include:

  • An inclusive nature-based playground with sunshade and rain shelter
  • Seating, tables & drinking fountains
  • Toilet block upgrade / maintenance
  • Carpark
  • An upgrade to the basketball courts and convert them to multi-sport courts
  • Learn to ride space for young children
