Enhancing disability inclusion in ACT’s justice system

2020-12-03

Minister for Disability and Justice Health Emma Davidson has congratulated ACT Corrective Services on the launch of its Disability Action and Inclusion Plan 2021-23 today, on the 2020 International Day of People with Disability (I-Day).

“The ACT Government is committed to making Canberra inclusive and welcoming for all. Ensuring equitable access to justice for people with disability is a key part of realising that vision,” Minister Davidson said.

“This plan sets out key actions ACT Corrective Services will implement over the next four years to improve access and inclusion for detainees, offenders, staff and members of the community who come into contact with corrective services facilities and services.”

ACTCS Commissioner Jon Peach said, “I am proud that ACT Corrective Services is a diverse organisation that welcomes people of all abilities. We have a critical responsibility to ensure that barriers to participation are removed at all levels and that the rights of people with disability are protected, from staff to offenders and community members visiting our facilities.”

The Disability Action and Inclusion Plan builds on the important goals of the ACT Government Disability Justice Strategy 2019-2020, which aims to achieve equity and inclusion for people with disability in the justice system.
