IPCC Report shows there is no room for fossil fuels

2021-08-10

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change's 6th Assessment Report, released last night, must be a powerful wake-up call to the old parties, the ACT Greens said today.

Greens candidate for the seat of Canberra and 20 year veteran climate campaigner, Tim Hollo, said "The science could not be clearer - you cannot claim to be serious about the climate crisis while still backing fossil fuels. It is dangerous nonsense for both major parties to try to have this planet and heat it, too."

"At the current rate, we will churn through the whole remaining carbon budget for a 50% chance of staying below 1.5C within 12 years. Missing that target will mean many more people and animals will die in fires, drought, floods and extreme heat."

"Canberrans I speak to are desperate for leadership on the climate crisis. They see the Coalition as out-and-out climate criminals,  and they see right through Labor's hypocritical hedging.”

“The IPCC report makes it crystal clear that you cannot in good faith claim to care about the climate while supporting new gas mines and the continuation of coal. Enough is enough”, Hollo said today

ACT Greens spokesperson Clancy Barnard noted that the Australian Greens are within achievable swings of winning several House of Representative seats at the upcoming federal election, including the seat of Canberra.

“Greens analysis shows that it is more likely than not that there will be a minority parliament, once again putting Greens MPs into a highly influential balance of power position”

“The last time this happened, the Greens were able to secure  $13 billion invested in renewable energy and pushed emissions down for the first and only time in Australian history”

“The seat of Canberra could be crucial in delivering a Greens cross-bench to pull a minority Labor government towards stronger and faster climate action”, Hollo also reflected today.
