Canberra drivers lead the way in electric vehicles

2023-05-01

New data for the ACT has shown that nearly one in five new cars registered is a zero emissions vehicle (ZEV).

ZEV registrations in the ACT have tripled over the past year, rising from 6% of new vehicle registrations in 2022 to 18% so far in 2023. Almost 900 new ZEVs have hit Canberra roads this year, cementing the ACT’s status as the ZEV capital of Australia.

Minister for Water, Energy, and Emissions Reduction Shane Rattenbury said this data shows that Canberrans are leading the way to reduce transport emissions in the ACT.

“Canberrans know climate change is an urgent issue that we need to address in the ACT and across the country. These latest ZEV registration figures are a clear indicator of the level of commitment from our community to reduce transport emissions,” Minister Rattenbury said.

“They also increasingly stack up financially. By switching to a ZEV, Canberrans can save approximately $2,000 on running costs each year, while also reducing their individual emissions footprint by almost 3 tonnes per year.

“As the number of ZEVs increase on our roads, we will also see growth in both the second-hand ZEV marketplace and electric vehicle charging stations making EVs more accessible and affordable for households and businesses.”

In good news for Canberra’s growing community of ZEV drivers, five new public electric vehicle charging stations are now available for use as part of the ACT Government’s grant program supporting the roll out of public EV chargers in Canberra.

“To support the uptake of zero emissions vehicles, the ACT Government is working to ensure there are at least 180 public EV chargers in the ACT by 2025,” Minster for Water, Energy and Emissions Reduction Shane Rattenbury said.

“The new chargers came online last week in Dickson, Woden and Tuggeranong, as part of 35 chargers Evie are installing in partnership with ActewAGL in Canberra, driven by the ACT Government’s recent $1.4 million investment in EV charging.”

Four of the chargers are being hosted in Tuggeranong and Woden by the Canberra Southern Cross club. All five chargers are dual port and will support simultaneous charging for 2 electric vehicles at each of these sites.

  • Two chargers at the Tuggeranong Southern Cross Club
  • Two at the Woden Southern Cross Club
  • One at 12 Challis Street Dickson in the Wilson car park.
