Canberrans Taken for a (Very Slow) Ride

2026-02-24

The federal Labor government has announced $230 million in additional funding for high-speed rail between Sydney and Newcastle. Meanwhile, Canberrans have to rely on low-speed rail to Sydney. The ACT Greens are calling on ACT and NSW Labor to actually bid for faster, cheaper, and greener interstate transport.

"Despite decades of talk, the ACT Labor Government have failed to even get a budget bid started," said Andrew Braddock, ACT Greens spokesperson for transport

“It's no wonder the Federal Government is prioritising the Newcastle – Sydney leg, we haven't even made the case."

"We know that Canberrans want and need more, faster options to get to Sydney. The bus is a great option, but it's still relatively slow. Flights are expensive and polluting.

"A fast rail link between Canberra and Sydney would provide a comfortable, affordable and environmentally friendlier option for Canberrans and Sydneysiders.

“It simply requires vision and boldness from government that we are yet to see.

“The ACT Greens will always support world-class transport options.”
