The ACT Greens have today welcomed the announcement that the SDN Bluebell early childhood education and care centre will remain open for another year but called for long term certainty for the centre's community.
"This is a huge win for the parents, workers and most importantly children, who rely on the amazing work of SDN Bluebell," said Laura Nuttall MLA, Greens spokesperson on early education.
The not-for-profit SDN today announced they had been offered a lease extension for their site at Belconnen, which they had previously announced to closure of due to the site being earmarked for new development.
"I've heard from parents and educators alike how much the centre was like a family to them and how devastating this announced closure has been. Today's news is a testament to how effectively the community came together to push against this closure.
"But this community doesn't just need security for another year, they it need long term. Amidst such an important national conversation about early childhood care and education, centres that have built such a strong trust with their communities shouldn't have to keep fighting for their survival."
Despite the proposed residential development, the site's crown lease provides that the purpose of the lease is for a childcare centre, and any other uses are in addition to that.
"Next week, my colleague Jo Clay and I will move a motion calling on the ACT government to seek advice on whether SDN Bluebell can continue to use this site long term and do everything it can to help them find a new site if not.
"The motion will also call on the government to provide targeted assistance to not-for-profit centres in the sector, because it should be about providing quality education and care, not making a profit."
