After five years of sustained Greens advocacy, e-cargo bikes are now included in the Sustainable Household Scheme, delivering Canberrans a cleaner, cheaper and more practical alternative to a second car.
“The Greens first called for electric bikes to be included in the Scheme in 2021, because high upfront costs were preventing many Canberrans from choosing affordable, zero-emissions transport.
“In May this year, the Greens secured an ACT Government commitment to expand the Scheme to include cargo bikes. From today, that commitment has been delivered, with eligible Canberrans able to access low-interest loans to purchase an e-cargo bike.
“This is a fantastic win for Canberrans who want a practical and affordable alternative to relying on a car that is zero emissions.
“For five years, the Greens have pushed to make electric bikes more accessible. Earlier this year, we secured the Government’s commitment. Today, e-cargo bikes have finally joined the Sustainable Household Scheme.
“For households and families considering whether they need a second car, an e-cargo bike can offer a cleaner and significantly cheaper option. Cargo bikes can carry your weekly shopping, kids, and other items easily.
“Access to low-interest finance will help more households make the switch, reduce their weekly transport costs and cut climate pollution at the same time.
“This change is the result of sustained advocacy and a practical proposal that will deliver real benefits for Canberra households.
“We are proud to have secured this change and to see e-cargo bikes finally included in the Sustainable Household Scheme," said Mr Braddock.
