Greens welcome end of forced redundancies, but ANU must go further

2025-08-20

The ACT Greens have welcomed today’s announcement that the ANU will end all forced redundancies, which was made less than a day after the Greens called on the university’s leadership to resign.

“Today, so many ANU staff will be breathing a long overdue sigh of relief as they finally have some semblance of the job security they deserved,” said Laura Nuttall MLA, ACT Greens spokesperson for education.

“While there is clearly a long way to go, this would not have happened without the sustained pressure that has come from so many staff and students in the ANU community. Through rallies, testimony and fierce advocacy, those who raised their voices have secured a great step forward against a callous process that prioritised corporate interests over education, careers and research. In no small part, this is a victory for ANU’s unionised workers, who have consistently stood united with each other and with their comrades who have already lost their jobs.

“However, this alone is far from enough. This will be a bittersweet day for those affected by changes already announced, and we join with the NTEU in calling for the University to confirm that already proposed redundancies will also be paused, at least until the conclusion of the ongoing TEQSA investigation.

“As it stands, the School of Music is still on the chopping block along with multiple entire degrees in the College of the Arts and Social Sciences – this process needs to be stopped.

“We once again reiterate the joint calls from staff and students to reverse the Renew ANU changes, for adequate public funding from the Commonwealth, new leadership for the university and the public release of the university’s self-assurance report.”
