Old Parties + Independents Undercut Libraries, Out of touch with Canberrans

2025-03-19

The major parties, along with independents Thomas Emerson MLA and Fiona Carrick MLA, today blocked an ACT Greens proposal to commit to minimum opening hours and staffing in Canberra’s libraries.

“I called for a commitment to minimum staffing levels and opening hours and the old parties and Independents banded together to reject it,” said ACT Greens Member for Yerrabi, Andrew Braddock.

“This move flies in the face of the apology from the Minister for City Services for the ongoing unplanned closures and the inconvenience caused to the public.

“We know that libraries across Canberra are struggling to staff their facilities, leading to regular unplanned closures and increasing pressure on staff. This failure to commit to bare minimum staffing levels demonstrates just how little regard the other parties have for these essential community facilities and the dedicated staff who keep them running.

The amendments passed will mean the community will continue to see regular unplanned closures and reduced services with no commitment to improving.

"Public libraries are not a luxury—they are vital community hubs and among the last truly inclusive spaces where all Canberrans are welcome, free of charge and free from judgment."

The major parties joined forces to amend Mr. Braddock’s original motion, in doing so neglecting their responsibility to meet national minimum staffing standards and opening hours.

To meet national minimum staffing requirements, the ACT needs 34 more full time staff. Without this, library staff will continue to be overworked and exhausted, we will continue to see more frequent, unplanned closure and impacts on services.

“Our librarians are essential workers who serve Canberrans from all walks of life with dedication and humility. They deserve job security and good working conditions for their invaluable contribution to our community.”
