Backing Community Sport

Canberrans love sport. It helps us make friends, stay healthy and makes our lives better.

But across the city, there are communities who can't plan events or take part in local sports. They need better spaces, facilities, and funding.

The ACT Greens will back local sport, and give our communities places where they can come together.

A Level Playing Field for Local Sports Funding

The ACT has some of the highest rates of community sport participation in the country - it helps keep the Canberra community connected.

But in the absence of any facilities management plan, community sports organisations have to individually lobby the government for funding, leading to inequitable outcomes across different sports and different parts of Canberra.

The Greens will take a long-term lens to planning for new and upgraded sport and recreation facilities, while immediately funding a number of community infrastructure projects across the ACT

THE ACT GREENS WILL:

  • Invest $100 million in a long-term plan for Canberra’s community sports infrastructure
  • Create a new peak body to champion sport and recreation across Canberra
  • Immediately invest $124 million into already-identified local needs, including a Woden Multisports Facility, Molonglo Valley Shared Sports Facility, Gungahlin Indoor Multisports Stadium, and a Kambah Ovals AFL Facility and more.

Investing In Mountain Biking

Whether you’re a local, visitor or competitive rider Canberra is a great place for mountain biking.

But to stay attractive as a biking destination we need more investment in more trails, and in the volunteer groups who help to build and maintain them.

With a major international mountain biking event coming to the region in October 2025, the Greens say now is the perfect time to invest $1.2 million in Canberra’s trail network, and the passionate people who do the work to look after it.

THE ACT GREENS WILL:

  •  Invest $800,000 to build additional trails at Stromlo Forest Park
  • Support local community groups with $400,000 over four years continue
their work building and maintaining trails across the ACT
  • Recognise and capitalise on the opportunity offered by Sea Otter 2025
coming to Mogo Trails next October.
