Ban fracking; stop Middle Arm and a just transition to renewables

2024-08-08

The Territory has the potential not just to rebuild, but to rapidly expand our economy by investing in renewables.

The NT Government government lobbied for a $3.5 billion subsidy for the Middle Arm Industrial precinct from the Federal Government, a toxic project that will put our climate and health at risk.

The Greens will use the $1.5 billion slated for Middle Arm to invest in:

  • A 150MW/600MWh big battery for the Darwin-Katherine electricity system
  • A big battery for the Mparntwe/Alice Springs grid
  • Local training & support, to build the renewables workforce & help workers to transition from gas jobs
  • The prioritisation and proper funding of Aboriginal community controlled renewables projects in remote communities.
  • Solar, insulation and air-conditioning in every public housing dwelling
  • Solar installation grants to every low-income house
  • 0% interest loans to home-owners to install solar
  • Honouring the 26c/kilowatt hour rate for people who installed solar under Labor’s grandfathered scheme, until 2028.
  • Developing an overarching NT Climate adaptation strategy, and implementing it with urgency.

The Greens are committed to tackling the economic & climate crises by building a stronger, more resilient, and fairer Territory for everyone .

Kat McNamara - Candidate for Nightcliff said:

“The best time to transition to renewables was 10 years ago, the second best time is now”

“If we were smart, we could put solar & airconditioning in all public housing and give homeowners zero interest loans for panels. We could make the NT a training hub & help gas workers transition to Green jobs. We could put solar into remote communities. We could power our manufacturing with a proper big battery. And that would all be cheaper than Middle Arm.”

Suki Dorras-Walker - Candidate for Fannie Bay:

“Middle Arm is a disaster for our health, it’s a disaster for the climate, it's a disaster for our economy, and it’s a disaster for the Larrakia people - who have been clear - they don’t want it”

Asta Hill - Candidate for Braitling:

“We all saw our town shrouded in smoke during bushfire season, with fires affecting land four times the size of ACT. It’s already too hot, we can’t keep fueling the climate crisis. People in the desert don’t want fracking - we need to ban it for good.”

“We’ve got overwhelmed hospitals; a 10 year long public housing waitlist and eye-watering wait times for childcare. Yet, the government wants to use our public money to subsidise a private gas project, it’s a total rip off for tax payers in the Territory.”
