Media Release: Greens candidate Suki Dorras-Walker wins primary vote in Lyons Ward

The voters of Lyons went to the polls yesterday to decide on the newest member of the Darwin City Council. It was a competitive field with 12 candidates vying for one position but the resounding message was clear from the primary vote count.

The Greens candidate, Suki Dorras-Walker, a prominent climate action advocate and organiser of the Binybara/Save Lee Point Campaign won the primary vote. Her primary vote was 21%, with a remarkable 26% of the Parap booth voting 1 for Dorras-Walker.

This campaign was funded by community donations and its success relied on the more than 50 volunteers who dedicated their time to this community campaign. The basis of this campaign was hundreds of conversations with residents of Lyons Ward, demonstrating that grassroots, responsive campaigns can restore the community’s faith in representative politics.

Whilst the preference allocation is still to come, this is a clear sign that the people of Lyons Ward (comprising 13,000 people) are ready for a progressive alternative and bold, positive leadership.

With the Territory election less than 12 months away, the NT Greens are building, listening to voters and preparing to take their first seat in Territory parliament.

Quotes attributable to Suki Dorras-Walker:

  • “We have been speaking to hundreds of people in Lyons ward and there is a resounding feeling that people want climate action at all levels of government. They do not want fracking or this destructive gas expansion that we are seeing in the Territory. People can feel Darwin getting hotter and they worry about the long term liveability of this city. They want their representatives to be tackling climate change head on and moving away from gas. We owe it to our kids and we owe it to this city.“
  • “This result [winning the primary vote count], one of our best ever in the area, shows that the community have been waiting for real consultation. Many of the policies I took to the polls were directly informed by community members - you can’t get this by sitting in a boardroom.”
  • “It’s clear that the people of Darwin are looking for an alternative to our extractive, boom and bust ways of operating, and want to protect this incredible city and secure a safe climate for generations of the future”
